A bomb similar to one that interrupted bar patrons.
It was a typical night at Darlene’s Tavern in Sudlersville, Maryland, at least until the bomb hit.
Patrons inside the bar heard a loud explosion at 9:00 p.m. When they looked outside, they saw lots of smoke.
Something had happened in the parking lot, near the propane tank.
At first they speculated that it was a car on fire, or a pipe bomb. Possibly fireworks. Maybe a meteor.
But when they started digging in the large hole, they discovered it was a bomb.
An A-10 Warthog jet from the Maryland National Guard had been flying overhead when an electrical failure caused one of its 33-pound blue BDU-33 training bombs to detach.
The pilot didn’t realize the fake bomb had been been dropped.
At least the bomb wasn’t real, thought some.
"It made me feel better that …," said manager Lena Hartlove.
"That they’re just bombing us with fake bombs? Yup that made us feel a lot better," said customer Abbie Karavas.
