The Dalai Lama college visit hoax

The Dalai Lama college visit hoax
They honored his visit with a peaceful gesture.

To honor the appearance of the Dalai Lama at their school, Vermont’s Middlebury College issued a press release saying that the college was withdrawing any money they had invested in companies that support war or destroy the environment:

Amidst excitement surrounding the visit of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Middlebury College has chosen to demonstrate ethical leadership in fully divesting its endowment from war. The spiritual leader of Tibet, who won the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize for opposing the use of violence, is appearing at Middlebury this weekend on the topic of ‘Cultivating Hope, Wisdom and Compassion.’ The college ?nds this divestment to be the most fitting way to welcome the Dalai Lama and to align its money with its mission.

Students applauded the move.

The college, however, did not, since they did not write the press release.

The fake press release was written as a hoax by five students to shame the college into revealing what companies the college was investing in with its $881 million endowment.

The hoaxsters obviously struck a nerve, since the college initiated a judicial board action to investigate the students for violating school policy on standards of integrity and honesty.

One of the key questions the hearing wanted to know: was the fake press release a satire, or a deception?

After the ten-hour hearing, the students received an unofficial reprimand.
