The riddle of the German “Forest Boy”

The riddle of the German "Forest Boy"
He said he’d been living in the German woods
with his dad since he was 12 years old.

A 17-year-old boy named Ray showed up at the Berlin City Hall in Germany asking for help. He said he’d been living in the woods for five years with his dad, sleeping in caves or tents. When his dad died, he buried him under some rocks. He couldn’t remember very much about his life, except that his mother was named Doreen and she’d died in a car accident, which explained some scars on his face.

Could he have been a missing or kidnapped child?

Authorities tried to help him. He was placed in a youth home for seven months. He received clothes, a cell phone, and attended a German language course. Nobody could discover more about his life.

Until they published his photo.

That’s when a former girlfriend recognized him, and said he wasn’t a forest boy at all. He was a 20-year-old man from Hengelo, the Netherlands.

He never lived in the forest. He was declared missing in the Netherlands when he was 19, but Dutch police did not investigate further since he was an adult.

There’s no explanation from him on why he made up his story.

German police may charge him with fraud.
