“Mandarin – Find his hat” – an optical illusion

"Mandarin - Find his hat" - an optical illusion

This is a vintage optical illusion cigarette card used for advertising by Major Drapkin & Co., part of the United Kingdom Tobacco Co.

This is in homage to my friend Gregg, who as I write is currently working as background (an extra) on the Johnny Depp movie The Lone Ranger.

Gregg’s work is an illusion as well. Although he’s Japanese-American, he will appear in the movie as a Chinese laborer.

"Chinese laborer number 18", to be exact.

And about the Mandarin’s hat – I couldn’t find it. It probably doesn’t help that I don’t know what it looks like.

  1. That is kind of what I look like on the set — just dirtier and poorer. One more day of filming here in Colorado and all the Chinese miners go home. (And no, I couldn’t find the hat either.)

  2. I think I found it. If you google "Mandarin hat" you see a picture of what it might look like. If you look under his elbow, there are some white circles that look like little pearls or something. The one on the left looks like the top of a mandarin hat (where the tassel is held) and the black and red curved parts to the left of it are the hat.

    I think.

  3. Yes, that’s it. It’s underneath his elbow and is meant to be the pocket of his jacket
