Magic – the art of performing by deceiving – would seem to need secrecy to survive, but what happens in these days of the Internet, where the secrets of any trick can be seen by anyone?

It’s easy to share a magic secret online. You can do it by video or by text. Few intellectual property protections (copyright, trademark, patent) are available to magicians, so legally there’s not much a master magician can do to stop a 14-year-old jackass in Sioux City from posting a YouTube video revealing a trick the master spent 30 years developing.

To hide the real secrets, some create fake explanations to muddy the water so the real explanation is unclear. Others lament about all the exposure. But are the secrets really that important?
