This old hoax photo, first found on the 4chan web site’s message board years ago, was sent around the Twitter network and caused quite a stir as it inflamed racial emotions.

Of course it’s fake, countered McDonalds:

"That pic is a senseless & ignorant hoax McD’s values ALL our customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture on both sides of the counter."

And it is fake, although not at first glance. Why did this hoax work at all? Couldn’t people tell right away that it couldn’t be true?

Well, it’s not inconceivable that someone could have put up a sign like that. Seeing signs in American restaurants singling out the "colored" is not that old.

A viewer could believe that a disgruntled McDonald’s franchise owner was upset and blamed all black people for a recent robbery. Or that a racist prankster just taped it (or "Photoshop" taped it) to the door of a local McDonalds.

What is true is that there’s still an undercurrent of emotion surrounding race, and this prank tapped into it.

    i too thought it was just a media stunt. heck there are way worse things than this on the internet. i think its just a racist media stunt and distraction away from more important issues

  2. Just because the company didn’t sanction it, does’t mean an employee didn’t actually put it up for its intended purpose.
