"I am so proud of myself for my ‘hacking business’ I will never regret what I did… I am the best of the best trickster. I laugh often when Mom says she worries … Even if I go to jail, big deal: I will learn something there. Hahaha."
– Van T. Dinh, age 19, from a diary entry written in 2003.
He did go to jail.
Mr. Dinh was a Drexel University student when he was charged with computer hacking and identity theft for online stock-trading fraud in 2003. He served 13 months in prison and had to pay $125,000 in restitution. After his release he was under 3 years supervision by the feds.
He did not learn to be a law-abiding citizen.
In 2008, Mr. Dinh used an administrative password to fraudulently add $110,000 to his online currency exchange service account. He also made trades by hacking into other customer accounts.
He was arrested for computer fraud and identity theft and sentenced to three years in prison.
