A subliminal ad is one that supposedly flashes a message to a consumer below his or her conscious awareness.
BMW made a commercial that created a type of subliminal optical illusion with an afterimage effect. Their motorcycle ad, unknown to the audience, temporarily burned the BMW logo onto viewer’s eyelids.
As the audience watched a BMW ad in a theater, a photographer’s lighting unit hidden behind the movie screen flashed light through a BMW stencil. When the spokesman in the commercial tells the audience to close their eyes, they see an image of the logo.
