“Memory is deceptive because it is colored by today’s events.”

“Memory is deceptive because it is colored by today's events.”
Albert Einstein – physicist, philosopher, writer
and source of good quotations.

This quote on memory is a quote by Albert Einstein.

It’s a great quotation. It says that we might not remember something correctly depending on where we are at our present moment in time. It makes sense that Einstein said this. Since he conceived of time as being relative, it seems appropriate that he’d say that what we remember about our past changes when we relate it to our present.

But is it a quote by Alfred Einstein?

If you want to know if Einstein said it, the way to discover the truth is to find out where and when Einstein said it. Yet I can’t find a single source for the quote. Anyone who uses the quote merely attributes it to Einstein.

Anyone who uses the quote could point to a book that the quote’s in as a source for the quote. And I did discover that there are many books that contain this Einstein quote.

Problem is, they’re all books of quotations.

With no sources for the quote.

So did Einstein say it, or not?

So far, I’ve found no proof he ever said it.

So right now, I can’t say he did say it, and I can’t say he didn’t say it.

"I like quoting Einstein. Know why? Because nobody dares contradict you."

– Studs Terkel, as quoted in "Voice of America" in The Guardian (March 1, 2002)
