Promoting a singer using threats of suicide

Is this the beginning of a new marketing trend?

A supposedly distraught young female fan of the 20-year-old singer Ariana Grande said on Twitter that she was going to kill herself by overdosing on pills. Toronto police contacted Twitter for her IP address and discovered that the account was from a spoofed address. When they mentioned this fact, the person tweeting said:
“It was a hoax! Sorry."
It's unknown who was behind the account, although it's likely that Ms. Grande did not know about the deception.

Police said that hoaxes like this might discourage people from responding to genuine calls for help.
