The moronic ATM scam

"How did you guys catch me?"

It's 2:30 in the morning. A man tries to scam an ATM cash machine. He deposits an empty envelope into the ATM, but tells the machine the envelope actually contains $1,000. He waits a few minutes.

At 2:33 a.m. he tries to take out his fake deposit of $1,000. He fails.

At 2:36 a.m. he tries to take out the money. Again, he gets nothing.

At 9:45 the next morning, he tries a third time. No money.

The next day, at 2 o'clock in the morning, he tries again. He pretends to deposit $1,000 into the ATM by depositing an empty envelope, but typing in that he deposited $1,000.

But this time, he waits a few days to try and withdraw his imaginary money.

And a few days later, he's successful - he actually receives money from his empty account.

He drives all over town and withdraws $608.50 from various ATMs.

Then he goes to a bank's drive-through window and asks the teller to withdraw $399 from his account. She refuses because his bank statements are not quite consistent.

Michael Coffin, 35, was soon arrested and charged for obtaining merchandise by false pretenses.

(It likely does not help his case that he's on all the video footage taken by the ATMs.)
