One of the condemned safety phones, at 1202 Pleasant Street,
near the University of Colorado in Boulder.
In the town where I live (Boulder, Colorado), police are removing emergency call boxes from the University of Colorado area called "the Hill," which is primarily populated by college students.
The phones, located in vertical cylinders with a blue emergency light, were installed in 2002 as a safety measure, but with the prevalence of cell phones, the police believe they're no longer needed.
This might be the reason: in the last two years (2009-10) police received 351 calls from the phones.
All of them were false calls.
