How the fake psychic saved the carnival

Stan seduces the sheriff by reading him.
In the 1947 movie Nightmare Alley, Stan Carlisle takes deception beyond the mechanical by using cold reading - a sophisticated manipulation with words which uses stock techniques and quick thinking - to convince the sheriff not to arrest members of the carnival.

Nightmare Alley starred Tyrone Power (as Carlisle), Joan Blondell and Coleen Gray. It was based on the novel by author and magician William Lindsay Gresham, who also wrote the highly informative and entertaining Monster Midway: An Uninhibited Look at the Glittering World of the Carny (1954.)
