From 1972, the thriller Sleuth has two men trying not to die as they humiliate and trick each other. Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine are the men whose fierce acting fills the entire movie. It’s unabashadley theatrical (it was based on the popular play of the same name by Anthony Shaffer.) It’s also grotesque, psychological, claustrophobic, and maze-like.
Messing with each other? That’s what these men like to do.
